What is Healthy Hoops?
Healthy Hoops is a special initiative that uses basketball and fun to focus on
the needs of kids with asthma. Under the guidance of celebrity basketball
coaches and medical experts, children between the ages of 5 and 16 - and
their families, will participate in a day of health awareness, entertainment,
asthma screenings, and basketball drills and skills workshops. It is FREE but
registration is limited. Click here to register!
Professional Development
An educational seminar developed by nationally recognized educators and
based on national standards provides continuing education units for school
nurses, recreational coaches, childcare providers, day care staff, parents and
community based organizations.
Asthma Screenings
All participants are required to undergo health screenings. The health
screenings are used to assess each participant's health status, assess
medications, review appropriate medication use, establish a personalized
action plan, and evaluate results.
Parent Education
Parent/guardian participation is an important part of Healthy Hoops. At
each Healthy Hoops event, there are workshops for parents that provide
management tips, prevention facts, and information about the importance
of complying with the treatment plan(s) that their doctor prescribes for
their children.
What to bring
MUST bring current asthma medications. You will be eligible for a drawing for a free gift if you bring your updated (within 6 months) asthma action plan. Please also bring or wear tennis shoes and shorts or other comfortable clothes. Healthy Hoops t-shirts will be provided to participants for free.
Rebound Event (follow-up event)
This will be our second Healthy Hoops event in Indianapolis. Our first event was in August 2009. Those who participated in the 2009 event will be invited to attend this event. First time participants are welcome to register for this event.
