Today, MDwise presented a backpack filled with much-needed school supplies to every student at Lakeside Elementary School, part of MSD of Warren Township in Indianapolis.

Lakeside Elementary Tools for Schools MDwise program. The Indianapolis-based statewide managed health care organization delivered more than 550 backpacks filled with notebooks, pencils, erasers and crayons to the school, along with a $30,000 check.

The donations are part of “Tools for Schools,” a new MDwise program providing funding and supplies to nine Indiana schools in need, including schools in Bloomington, Indianapolis, Gary and East Chicago. MDwise provided funds and backpacks to William A. Bell School, Indianapolis Public School (IPS) # 60, and Charles W. Fairbanks School, IPS # 105, earlier this year.

“We are very thankful for this generous donation.
This comes at a much needed time for our families, many who are struggling to get by in today’s economy,” said Stephen Foster, principal at Lakeside Elementary.
“Seventy-five percent of our students live in poverty and it is often difficult for our families to replenish the required school supplies for their children.
I am grateful that organizations such as MDwise remember the needs of our students after the school year has progressed.”

“MDwise couldn’t think of a better time to give some of our students in great need a fresh batch of school supplies and some additional funds to improve their educational experience,” said Charlotte MacBeth, chief executive officer of MDwise. “We are a health care-focused company, and we know that getting a good education is a significant part of every child’s overall health and well-being.”

Lakeside Elementary intends to use the $30,000 donation to enhance student education.

MDwise worked with Indiana State Senator Patricia Miller (district 32) to identify an area school in great need of assistance.

“It’s essential to support education in our community,” Sen. Miller said. “MDwise’s generous donation of school supplies will help students, teachers and parents as budgets tighten during these difficult economic times.”

MDwise is Indiana’s largest not-for-profit managed health care company exclusively serving many of the state’s most underserved citizens.
