MDwise, the East Chicago Community Health Center and St. Catherine Hospital hosted the “To Your Health” community screening and enrollment event on Thursday, October 27. The event, held in the Lakeside Garden Apartment’s Community Room, was a big success as 46 screenings were provided that day. In addition, 19 people took advantage of the enrollment services by meeting with the Covering Kids and Families representative and four of those people signed up for a state health coverage program.

The event, which was free and open to the public, featured a variety of health screenings including diabetes, lead, blood pressure and dental. Attendees had a chance to obtain education information on a variety of health and community related topics.

Millie Guevara, building manager for the East Chicago Community Health Center, shared “I strongly believe Health Screening Fairs like this one are very beneficial to the community. Many who come are not aware that they may have a health issue until they take part in one of the screenings. I had someone tell me today that the diabetes screening was an eye opener for them.”

Elisa Ramos, a patient tech from St. Catherine Hospital, added that, “People are amazed by the Body Mass Index (BMI) screening.  This test is a first step to educating people on healthy eating and a good diet.”

The “To Your Health” event represented MDwise’s first health screening event in the East Chicago area so far this year.
