Terre Haute elementary students will sing, dance, laugh and play to get healthy

1/19/2010

TERRE HAUTE–Elementary students at four Terre Haute schools will learn fun, new ways to get active and healthy Jan. 22 and 29. MDwise, a statewide managed care organization, is bringing Radio Disney’s “Move It!” program – an upbeat, kid-friendly exercise presentation aimed at curbing childhood obesity – to students at Davis Park, DeVaney, Dixie Bee and St. Patrick elementary schools.

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, nearly 30 percent of Hoosier kids ages 10–17 were overweight or obese in 2009.

“Childhood obesity is a growing problem, and MDwise is taking an active role to address this issue among Hoosier kids,” said Jamie Bruce, MDwise chief compliance officer and director of external affairs. “The 'Move It’! program is a great initiative that engages kids with fun, interactive activities to get them excited about being active and healthy.”

Themed “Get Off Your Seat and On Your Feet,” the “Move It!” program helps kids identify physical activities they enjoy doing, whether it’s dancing, skateboarding, rollerblading or just playing a game of tag with friends. The Terre Haute “MoveIt!” tour dates and times are:

                   Jan. 22, 9:45 a.m. – DeVaney Elementary School
                   Jan. 22, 10:30 a.m. – St. Patrick Elementary School
                   Jan. 29, 10:30 a.m. – Davis Park Elementary School
                   Jan. 29, 1:30 p.m. – Dixie Bee Elementary School

MDwise is working with Radio Disney to take the “Move It!” program to students across Indiana. The program has already reached students at 12 schools in Indianapolis, Fort Wayne and Gary.

Healthy Tips: Parents play a big role in shaping their children’s eating and exercise habits. MDwise offers the following tips to help parents improve their kids’ health:

  • Have your child help plan and prepare meals. Children may be more willing to eat the food they help fix.
  • Be a role model for your children. If they see you being physically active and having fun, they are more likely to be active and stay active throughout their lives.
  • Encourage your child to be active every day.

MDwise is Indiana’s largest not-for-profit managed health care company exclusively serving many of the state’s most underserved citizens – Hoosier children and adults who are uninsured or underinsured. MDwise provides services through the Hoosier Healthwise, Healthy Indiana Plan and Care Select health coverage programs. For more information about MDwise, visit MDwise.org.
