EVANSVILLE, Ind. – October 19, 2011
MDwise helped host the grand opening celebration for the University of Southern Indiana-Glenwood Community Health Center at the Glenwood Leadership Academy in Evansville on Saturday, October 15. More than 500 Glenwood residents came out to see the new school-based health center. This location marks the 35th school-based health center in the state of Indiana.
School-based health centers are located in a school or on school grounds and provide on-site comprehensive preventive and primary health services. They were created to provide basic health care to medically underserved children and adolescents. School-based health centers strive to advance health promotion activities, provide leadership in adolescent health, respond to the community and focus on the student.
The event, which was free and open to the public, featured free health screenings, including body mass index, cholesterol and blood pressure. Enrollment in Hoosier Healthwise and Healthy Indiana Plan (HIP) was also available. In addition, educational information on the community and various health topics were provided. Attendees also had the chance to play games and win prizes and giveaways.
Dr. Coudret, Dean of Nursing at the University of Southern Indiana, commented on the outreach aspect of the new school-based health center. “In addition to serving as a primary care clinic, emphasis will be on providing individuals in the Glenwood neighborhood with information and tools to improve their health.”
Additional sponsors of the grand opening event included Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation, University of Southern Indiana, MHS, Anthem, St. Mary’s Medical Center and Southwestern Behavioral Healthcare, Inc.
