LaPorte County’s Covering Kids and Families receives $20,000 from MDwise to support efforts to enroll more children and adults in state health plans

Michigan City, Ind. – February 7, 2011
Covering Kids and Families (CKF) of LaPorte County recently received a $20,000 donation from MDwise, a statewide managed health care organization, to further its efforts to enroll more eligible children and families in the state’s Medicaid health plans.

CKF of LaPorte County is a coalition of partners overseen by Healthy Communities of LaPorte County that works to inform residents about state health insurance options and offers enrollment assistance to eligible individuals. Statewide, CKF of Indiana is made up of more than 500 partnering organizations committed to ensuring that all Hoosier children and families eligible for Medicaid and the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) are enrolled.

The $20,000 donation from MDwise will support CKF’s mission to help all LaPorte County children and adults receive health coverage. MDwise is Indiana’s only not-for-profit managed care organization exclusively serving the state’s Medicaid population through three health plans – Hoosier Healthwise, the Healthy Indiana Plan and Care Select.

MDwise’s donation continues the organization’s long-standing support of CKF. Just last August, the organization donated 500 backpacks through CKF to the Back to School event in Michigan City.

With the help of MDwise and other supporters, CKF conducts various special events, such as health fairs, and disseminates information about the state’s health plan options to LaPorte County residents.

For more information or for help enrolling in HIP or Hoosier Healthwise, please contact Monica Cavinder, director of Covering Kids & Families, (219) 221-1559. Eligible residents can also apply at the local Department of Family Resources’ office, or online at www.in.gov/fssa.

Covering Kids & Families of La Porte County is part of a statewide organization committed to identifying and enrolling children and adults eligible for insurance through the state’s Hoosier Healthwise and Healthy Indiana Plan. CKF carries out its mission of “Advocating Health Coverage for All” by partnering with local agencies and organizations to develop outreach strategies. CKF helps establish enrollment centers, track enrollment trends, study policy changes, and provide technical assistance to hospitals, health centers, schools, child care and other service providers. Statewide, CKF-IN operates in twenty-one counties that serve more than 51% of families and children enrolled in Medicaid and SCHIP. CKF has a remarkable group of partners dedicated to reducing the number of uninsured in La Porte County.
