MDwise donates backpacks filled with school supplies to 740 students at Franklin Academy in East Chicago

EAST CHICAGO, Ind. – May 23, 2011
Every student at Franklin Academy in East Chicago, Ind., received a backpack filled with school supplies from MDwise, Indiana's only not-for-profit managed health care organization serving Hoosiers on Medicaid. MDwise donated 740 backpacks filled with notebooks, pencils, erasers and crayons to the school.

The donations are part of "MDwise Tools for Schools," a MDwise program providing backpacks and school supplies to eight Indiana schools in need, including schools in Anderson, Evansville, Fort Wayne, Hammond, Indianapolis, Muncie and South Bend.

Charlotte MacBeth, chief executive officer of MDwise, said, “As a statewide health care-focused organization, we recognize that a good education is an important part of every child’s overall health and well-being. We hope these new backpacks and fresh school supplies remind these young Hoosier students that we, at MDwise, care about their educational experience, and encourage continued hard work toward academic success.”

MDwise worked with Indiana State Rep. Earl Harris (District 2) to identify an East Chicago school in great need of assistance.

“The MDwise Tools for Schools program has been instrumental in ensuring that students in East Chicago are prepared, which is the first step to achieving academic success,” said Rep. Harris. “I, along with the families of Franklin Academy, appreciate the generosity of MDwise.”

MDwise Tools for Schools is part of Ms. Bluebelle’s Club for Kids, MDwise’s comprehensive program that promotes the healthy well-being of Hoosier children through special activities and outreach. Now in its second year, Tools for Schools provided more than 6,800 supply-filled backpacks to schools and back-to-school events across Indiana in 2010.
