MDwise donates backpacks filled with school supplies to 510 students at Madison Primary Center in South Bend

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – May 9, 2011
Every student at Madison Primary Center in South Bend, Ind., received a backpack filled with school supplies from MDwise, Indiana’s only not-for-profit managed health care organization serving Hoosiers on Medicaid. MDwise donated 510 backpacks filled with notebooks, pencils, erasers and crayons to the school.

The donations are part of “MDwise Tools for Schools,” a MDwise program providing backpacks and school supplies to eight Indiana schools in need, including schools in Anderson, East Chicago, Evansville, Fort Wayne, Indianapolis, Hammond and Muncie.
Charlotte MacBeth, chief executive officer of MDwise, said, “As a statewide health care-focused organization, we recognize that a good education is an important part of every child’s overall health and well-being. We hope these new backpacks and fresh school supplies remind these young Hoosier students that we, at MDwise, care about their educational experience, and encourage continued hard work toward academic success.”
MDwise worked with Indiana State Rep. Ryan Dvorak (District 8) to identify a South Bend school in great need of assistance.
"The hardworking students at Madison deserve this great contribution, and their parents and teachers know the supplies will be put to good use," said Rep. Dvorak. “Many of our students do not have the opportunity to own a Backpack which adequately holds their school supplies,” said Principal Sharon Hurt. “MDwise’s generosity enables our students to have pride in their backpack and feel good about coming to school.”
MDwise Tools for Schools is part of Ms. Bluebelle’s Club for Kids, MDwise’s comprehensive program that promotes the healthy well-being of Hoosier children through special activities and outreach. Now in its second year, Tools for Schools provided more than 6,800 supply-filled backpacks to schools and back-to-school events across Indiana in 2010.
