MDwise donates backpacks filled with school supplies to more than 580 students at James Russell Lowell Elementary School in Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – April 8, 2011
Today, every student at James Russell Lowell Elementary School in Indianapolis, Ind., received a backpack filled with school supplies from MDwise, Indiana’s only not-for-profit managed health care organization serving Hoosiers on Medicaid. MDwise donated more than 580 backpacks filled with notebooks, pencils, erasers and crayons to the school.

The donations are part of “MDwise Tools for Schools,” a MDwise program providing backpacks and school supplies to eight Indiana schools, including schools in Anderson, East Chicago, Evansville, Fort Wayne, Gary, Hammond, Muncie and South Bend.

Charlotte MacBeth, chief executive officer of MDwise, said, “As a statewide health care-focused organization, we recognize that a good education is an important part of every child’s overall health and well-being. We hope these new backpacks and fresh school supplies remind these young Hoosier students that we, at MDwise, care about their educational experience, and encourage continued hard work toward academic success.”

MDwise worked with both Indiana State Rep. William Crawford (District 98) and Rep. Gregory Porter (District 96) to identify an Indianapolis school deserving of this donation.

“I would like to thank MDwise for their second annual backpack giveaway. This will enhance the learning process for our youths within IPS,” said Rep. Crawford. “MDwise has and continues to be a strong community advocate in Indianapolis and throughout the state.”

“I am incredibly grateful for the partnership with MDwise to provide backpacks filled with the tools of educational empowerment,” added Rep. Porter. “Providing these school supplies for the students ensures that they will have what they need in order to be successful students.”

“James Russell Lowell Elementary School is a Caring School Community. We teach children to care for each other and their neighborhood,” said Principal Lauren Johnson. “This support will show students that the community cares for the students of School 51 as much as they care for the community. The backpacks will provide students with the needed school supplies and eliminate one more barrier to their success.”

MDwise Tools for Schools is part of Ms. Bluebelle’s Club for Kids, MDwise’s comprehensive program that promotes the healthy well-being of Hoosier children through special activities and outreach. Now in its second year, Tools for Schools provided more than 6,800 supply-filled backpacks to schools and back-to-school events across Indiana in 2010.
