MDwise donates backpacks filled with school supplies to more than 750 students at Vogel Elementary School in Evansville

Evansville, Ind. – April 1, 2011
Today, every student at Vogel Elementary School in Evansville, Ind., received a backpack filled with school supplies from MDwise, Indiana’s only not-for-profit managed health care organization serving Hoosiers on Medicaid. MDwise donated more than 750 backpacks filled with notebooks, pencils, erasers and crayons to the school.

The donations are part of “MDwise Tools for Schools,” a MDwise program providing backpacks and school supplies to eight Indiana schools, including schools in Anderson, East Chicago, Evansville, Fort Wayne, Gary, Hammond, Muncie and South Bend.

Charlotte MacBeth, chief executive officer of MDwise, said, “As a statewide health care-focused organization, we recognize that a good education is an important part of every child’s overall health and well-being. We hope these new backpacks and fresh school supplies remind these young Hoosier students that we, at MDwise, care about their educational experience, and encourage continued hard work toward academic success.”

MDwise worked with Indiana State Rep. Suzanne Crouch (District 78) and Sen. Vaneta Becker (District 50) to identify an Evansville school deserving of this donation.

“I appreciate the contribution of the backpacks from MDwise to our students at Vogel School,” said Sen. Becker. “This initiative helps so many young students throughout our state.”

“This is a great program to help out Hoosier children,” said Rep. Crouch. “By providing them with the backpacks containing school supplies, we are giving them the tools to be successful in school and obtain a good education. It may seem like a small gesture, but it really means a lot to these children. I am grateful that I had the opportunity to work with the Tools for Schools program and help positively impact the children in our community.”

“We greatly appreciate the generosity of MDwise for donating backpacks to our Vogel Elementary students,” said Dr. Carl Underwood, the school’s principal. “This donation is unexpected and we are honored to receive such a gift.”

MDwise Tools for Schools is part of Ms. Bluebelle’s Club for Kids, MDwise’s comprehensive program that promotes the healthy well-being of Hoosier children through special activities and outreach.  Now in its second year, Tools for Schools provided more than 6,800 supply-filled backpacks to schools and back-to-school events across Indiana in 2010.
