Students at Longfellow Elementary School receive
MDwise backpacks filled with school supplies.

Today, every student at Longfellow Elementary School in Muncie, Ind., received a backpack filled with school supplies from MDwise, Indiana’s only not-for-profit managed health care organization serving Hoosiers on Medicaid. MDwise donated 306 backpacks filled with notebooks, pencils, erasers and crayons to the school.

The donations are part of “MDwise Tools for Schools,” a MDwise program providing backpacks and school supplies to eight Indiana schools in need, including schools in Anderson, East Chicago, Evansville, Fort Wayne, Gary, Hammond, Muncie and South Bend.

Charlotte MacBeth, chief executive officer of MDwise, said, “As a statewide health care-focused organization, we recognize that a good education is an important part of every child’s overall health and well-being. We hope these new backpacks and fresh school supplies remind these young Hoosier students that we, at MDwise, care about their educational experience, and encourage continued hard work toward academic success.”

MDwise worked with Indiana State Rep. Dennis Tyler (District 34) to identify a Muncie school in great need of assistance.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank MDwise for their commitment to our children’s opportunities for a good education, health and well-being,” said Rep. Tyler. “These types of programs could not be more important for families and children during these extremely tough economic times. We all know good health is important to a child’s ability to excel in the classroom and in life. Thank you MDwise.”

“This is a great opportunity for all of our students and it could not have come at a better time,” said Shawn Davis, principal of Longfellow Elementary School. “With the present economy, this can be a hard time of year financially and the backpacks are a great way to replenish school supplies.”

MDwise Tools for Schools is part of Ms. Bluebelle’s Club for Kids, MDwise’s comprehensive program that promotes the healthy well-being of Hoosier children through special activities and outreach. Now in its second year, Tools for Schools provided more than 6,800 supply-filled backpacks to schools and back-to-school events across Indiana in 2010.
