Today, every student at Erskine Elementary School in Anderson, Ind., received a backpack filled with school supplies from MDwise, Indiana’s only not-for-profit managed health care organization serving Hoosiers on Medicaid. MDwise donated more than 490 backpacks filled with notebooks, pencils, erasers and crayons to the school.

The donations are part of “MDwise Tools for Schools,” a program providing backpacks and school supplies to eight Indiana schools in need, including schools in Anderson, East Chicago, Evansville, Fort Wayne, Gary, Hammond, Muncie and South Bend.
Charlotte MacBeth, chief executive officer of MDwise, said, “As a statewide health care-focused organization, we recognize that a good education is an important part of every child’s overall health and well-being. We hope these new backpacks and fresh school supplies remind these young Hoosier students that we, at MDwise, care about their educational experience, and encourage continued hard work toward academic success.”
MDwise worked with Indiana State Rep. Terri Austin (District 36) to identify an Anderson school in great need of assistance.
“We are very grateful to MDwise for their generosity and support of Anderson Community Schools and Erskine Elementary School,” said Rep. Austin. “So many families are feeling the pinch of the economy. Providing students and families with the backpacks and school supplies is just one way we can ensure that students have the tools they need to be successful in learning.”
“Much thanks to MDwise for their generous contribution of backpacks and school supplies to Erskine! Erskine is thrilled to accept this wonderful donation,” said Kara Miller, school principal. “Additionally, our heartfelt thanks go to Rep. Austin for realizing the needs of the Erskine students. Our students and their families will greatly welcome new supplies at this time of year, as additional supplies are always needed. New supplies will certainly rejuvenate the students’ excitement and desire to learn.”
MDwise Tools for Schools is part of Ms. Bluebelle’s Club for Kids, MDwise’s comprehensive program that promotes the healthy well-being of Hoosier children through special activities and outreach. Now in its second year, Tools for Schools provided more than 6,800 supply-filled backpacks to schools and back-to-school events across Indiana in 2010.
