MDwise and the St. Henry’s Community Center in Fort Wayne hosted the “Healthy Baby, Healthy You” community baby shower on Thursday, October 20. Almost 70 expecting moms and their guests came to St. Henry’s Community Center to learn more about pregnancy and being a parent.
The event, which was free and open to the public, featured a variety of educational information on topics such as pre-term labor, safe sleeping, breast-feeding and proper nutrition while pregnant and after birth. Attendees also had the chance to play games and win great prizes.
Paige Wilkins of Covering Kids & Families of NE Indiana shared that, “this was a wonderful for pregnant women to learn about prenatal care. The collaboration between multiple local agencies really shows that you can accomplish more as a group."
Sally Edington, director of Healthier Mom’s & Babies, added, “The attendance was great and the information provided very beneficial to the attendees. I was taken aback at the number of guests who were not familiar with the signs of preterm labor, warning signs in pregnancy and the concept of kick counts. There is no question that we achieved our goal of educating pregnant women in an enjoyable format.”
Sally also shared a comment from one of the expecting moms in attendance. She said, “I thought it was a wonderful event that was fun and well organized. Even though this isn’t my first pregnancy, there was a lot of good information shared that I was unaware of. The resources and educational information I was able to receive at the event will definitely benefit me during the remainder of my pregnancy.”
Additional sponsors of the “Healthy Baby, Healthy You” event included the Lutheran Health Network, Community Action of Northeast Indiana (CANI), Parkview Health, March of Dimes, Healthier Moms and Babies, and Early Childhood Alliance.
