600 students aligned with Healthlinc in northern Indiana receive backpacks and school supplies through donation from MDwise

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – 600 students in northern Indiana received backpacks filled with school supplies at various Healthlinc Back-to-School events because of a donation from MDwise, Indiana’s only not-for-profit managed health care organization serving those on the state’s Hoosier Healthwise, Healthy Indiana Plan and Care Select health coverage programs.

The backpacks were filled with much-needed supplies including notebooks, pencils, erasers and crayons and are part of “MDwise Tools for Schools,” a MDwise program providing backpacks and school supplies to students across the state. The Healthlinc locations that received backpacks as part of this initiative include Michigan City, Knox, Mishawaka and Valparaiso.

HealthLinc, Inc. is a nonprofit organization founded in 1996 that is dedicated to improving the health of Northwest Indiana residents. HealthLinc provides quality primary care services without regard for a patient's ability to pay. MDwise worked with HealthLinc to identify events at which students deserving this assistance would be present.

“Without the backpack donations from MDwise, these students might not have the opportunity to own new school supplies, hindering their academic success,” said Charlotte MacBeth, chief executive officer of MDwise. “MDwise believes that the total health of children consists of physical, mental and emotional well-being. Achieving academic success contributes to the mental and emotional health of students by giving them self-confidence.”

“MDwise Tools for Schools” is part of Ms. Bluebelle’s Club for Kids, MDwise’s comprehensive program that promotes the healthy well-being of Hoosier children through special activities and outreach. In 2011, Tools for Schools provided more than 10,000 supply-filled backpacks to schools and back-to-school events across Indiana in 2011. Now in its third year, the program will donate more than 10,500 of these backpacks to schools and back-to-school events across Indiana in 2012.
