Expectant moms in Fort Wayne learn importance of immunizations, nutrition

Healthy Baby, Healthy You shower part of statewide initiative to deliver critical information at no cost

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Expecting moms in Fort Wayne had the chance to learn the importance of immunizations and nutrition, among other pregnancy-related topics, at a free community baby shower today. Sponsored by MDwise, Indiana’s only not-for profit managed health care organization, and other community partners, today’s “Healthy Baby, Healthy You” event is part of a statewide initiative to deliver critical pregnancy information free of charge to those who need it most.
The event, which took place at the Renaissance Pointe YMCA, featured informational sessions on a variety of topics including pre-term labor, safe sleep, breast and bottle feeding, the importance of immunizations and nutrition, and local community resources for children and families. Enrollment assistance for health care plans was also available to assist expecting mothers with proper health care needs during pregnancy.
“Through community event such as this, we are able to assist in making the pregnancy process a true learning experience for mothers because we strongly believe that education and awareness is a critical component of health care. Because of that, we have developed and continue to facilitate community events such as this shower free of charge to the attendees. It’s all about educating expecting mothers, providing a forum to ask questions, and have a little fun at the same time,” said Dr. Caroline Carney Doebbeling, chief medical officer of MDwise.
In honor of November being Prematurity Awareness Month, MDwise partnered with community organizations such as CANI (Community Action of Northeast Indiana), March of Dimes, Healthier Moms and Babies, Early Childhood Alliance, Lutheran Health Network and Parkview to present the event.
“We are excited to work with MDwise to offer this is a wonderful opportunity for pregnant moms to learn about the importance of prenatal care, safe sleep and nutrition,” said Paige Wilkins, the Covering Kids and Families Coalition supervisor at Community Action of NE Indiana. “It’s a true example of community organizations collaborating together to fill a need in the community.”
