MDwise donates backpacks filled with school supplies to 627 students at Warren G. Harding Elementary School in Hammond

HAMMOND, Ind. – Today, every student at Warren G. Harding Elementary School in Hammond, Ind., received a backpack filled with school supplies from MDwise, Indiana’s only not-for-profit managed health care organization serving those on the state’s Hoosier Healthwise, Healthy Indiana Plan and Care Select health coverage programs, during an all-school assembly.
MDwise donated 627 backpacks filled with notebooks, pencils, erasers and crayons to the school as part of its “Tools for Schools” program, a statewide initiative that provided more than 10,000 supply-filled backpacks to schools and back-to-school events across Indiana in 2011. Now in its third year, the program will donate more than 10,500 of these supply-filled backpacks across Indiana throughout 2012.
Charlotte MacBeth, chief executive officer of MDwise, said, “As a statewide health care-focused organization, we recognize that a good education is an important part of every child’s overall health and well-being. We hope these new backpacks and fresh school supplies remind these young Hoosier students that we, at MDwise, care about their educational experience, and encourage continued hard work toward academic success.”
MDwise received the support of Congressman Pete Visclosky (First Congressional District of Indiana) and Representative Brown as they recognize Harding Elementary as a Hammond school in great need of assistance.
“I appreciate MDwise’s commitment to the community, represented by its generous donation of school supplies to Warren G. Harding Elementary School in Hammond,” said Congressman Visclosky. “A good education and quality healthcare provide the foundation on which one can build a successful and fulfilling life. I applaud MDwise for their efforts in Northwest Indiana and for all they do across the State of Indiana.”
“I want to thank MDwise for its contribution to our Harding students and families. Your gift of backpacks for our students is an awesome and generous consideration,” said Michael Carey, principal of Harding Elementary. “This will help to create tremendous enthusiasm for the beginning of our school year and also lighten the financial burden for many of our families. The Harding community appreciates your thoughtfulness.”
“MDwise Tools for Schools” is a section of Ms. Bluebelle’s Club for Kids, MDwise’s comprehensive program that promotes the healthy well-being of Hoosier children through special activities and outreach.
