Second annual event offers free immunizations, $15 physicals

GASTON, Ind. – Today, students from Wes-Del Schools in Gaston, Ind., participated in the second annual School/Sports Physicals and Immunizations event sponsored by MDwise, Indiana’s only not-for-profit managed health care organization. The event took place at Wes-Del High School and more than 200 students from local schools participated in the event, which offered immunizations free-of-charge and physicals for only $15.

The event, organized by United Way of Delaware County’s Local Connection initiative and in partnership with Open Door Health Services, was also open to the public. In its second year, the School/Sports Physical and Immunizations event allowed families that may not be able to afford it on their own the opportunity to receive these free and discounted services. Since school physicals are a requirement today, this event provided a much-needed solution for many students.

Dr. Caroline Carney Doebbeling, chief medical officer of MDwise, said, “As a statewide health care-focused organization, we recognize that proper health care is an important part of every child’s overall well-being. We hope that by providing these services free-of-charge or at a discounted rate, and in an easily accessible location, local students and families are reminded that we at MDwise care about their well-being and health.”

“Students who would have been previously excluded from participating in school sports due to lack of proper physicals now can thanks to MDwise sponsorship of this event,” said Sue Godfrey, project coordinator for the Local Connection.

Wes-Del teacher Jennifer Lee added, “It’s a wonderful feeling to be able to offer an event to our students and their families which provides free immunizations if their insurance doesn’t cover that cost and physicals for as low as $15. We’re so grateful to MDwise and these other community organizations for their support and efforts.”

This event is part of MDwise’s comprehensive program to promote the healthy well-being of Hoosier children through special activities and outreach.
