Terre Haute elementary schools awarded funds for participation in Battle of the Fit competition

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – MDwise, Indiana’s only nonprofit managed health care organization serving those on the state’s Hoosier Healthwise, Healthy Indiana Plan and Care Select health coverage programs, is proud to announce the results of its competitive 8-week Battle of the Fit program. The organization presented schools with their winnings on April 9 and 11 at three assemblies.

Battle of the Fit promotes physical activity and health and wellness, while making exercise fun for children, all in an effort to combat childhood obesity. Participating schools were required to organize fitness activities for students, such as sports, games and dancing. These activities were incorporated into the school day in places where physical activity previously did not exist. Schools earned points for the number of students participating and the duration of the activities and could track their progress on a specially designed website, BattleoftheFit.MDwise.org.

The program, in its second year, kicked off on January 30 and featured three Vigo County schools – Ouabache Elementary, Benjamin Franklin Elementary and West Vigo Elementary. These schools were all competing for the title of “Fittest School,” as well as monetary prizes. The results are in, and the standings are as follows:

o   First place with 10,446 points and the winner of $6,000 – West Vigo Elementary
o   Second place with 8,728 points and the winner of $3,000 – Ouabache Elementary
o   Third place with 4,215 points and the winner of $2,000 – Benjamin Franklin Elementary

The monetary prizes are designated to be used toward the purchase of fitness-related equipment for each school. Each school was also awarded a Battle of the Fit trophy for display to remind the students of the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

“It was exciting to see how eager and involved the three schools were. When we developed Battle of the Fit, our hope was that we could provide children with an engaging approach to physical fitness,” said Dr. Caroline Doebbeling, chief medical officer for MDwise. “Encouraging youth to remain active and healthy remains a top priority for MDwise as a health care organization. We hope these three schools and their students continue to exercise and eat healthy in the months and years ahead.”

“Our students thoroughly enjoyed participating in the Battle of the Fit program,” said Peggy Pfrank, principal of West Vigo Elementary. “It provided them with an opportunity to make physical fitness fun and come together as a team to work toward a common goal. Receiving this $6,000 enables us to improve the quality of fitness equipment our students have access to, thus improving their physical health at the same time.”
