South Wayne Elementary named 2017 Battle of the Fit winner

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – MDwise, an Indiana-based nonprofit health management organization, is excited to announce the results of its competitive six-week Battle of the Fit program.

The Battle of the Fit program requires participating schools to organize regular fitness activities for students including general exercise, sports, games and dance-related activities. For the past six weeks, these activities were incorporated into the school day to keep students active throughout the day. Students earned points for being active, and MDwise encouraged students and parents to track their school’s progress online throughout the competition on a specially designed website. MDwise also shared weekly health tips and small motivational prizes with participants in an effort to build momentum and keep kids motivated.

The program, in its fourth year, kicked off on September 25 and featured three Fort Wayne schools – South Wayne, Fairfield and Adams Elementary. These schools all competed for the title of “Fittest School,” as well as monetary prizes. The results are in, and the standings are as follows:

  • South Wayne Elementary – First place with 15,729 points and the winner of $6,000
  • Adams Elementary – Second place with 12,617 points and the winner of $3,000
  • Fairfield Elementary –  Third place with 2,621 points and the winner of $2,000

The monetary prizes are designated to be used toward the purchase of fitness-related equipment for each school. Each school will also be awarded a Battle of the Fit trophy for display to remind the students of the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
The schools will receive their monetary prizes and trophies at awards ceremonies on December 7.

“This year’s Battle of the Fit competitors gave it their all! Every year I am so impressed with how involved the students are and how encouraging the faculty are at each school,” said Dr. Ty Sullivan, senior vice president and chief medical officer at MDwise. “This competition provides us a unique opportunity to engage with students and get them excited about physical fitness and health. We know that building healthy habits at a young age helps children stand a better chance of preventing the development of chronic diseases down the road. We hope these students continue to make healthy choices in the months and years ahead.”

“What an amazing way to get students and staff engaged in learning about healthy choices and movement by creating a challenge!” said Federa Smith, principal at Adams Elementary. “The students and staff at Adams loved the opportunity to participate in the Battle of the Fit Program. They enjoyed everything from the morning stretches, organized recess activities, lunchtime movement, all school dancing at the end of the day and the fun Fridays and field days we would have. The teachers also came up with creative ways for the students to move in the classrooms and incorporated it into their lessons. Children were made to move and they really enjoyed the extra movement. It truly does help them to learn better.”
