MDwise, a health maintenance organization that serves more than 300,000 Hoosiers on Medicaid, is now offering home-delivered, medically tailored meals to members. Meals are available to members who test positive for COVID-19 as well as for members with congestive heart failure, coronary artery disease and/or diabetes post discharge from an in-patient hospital stay.
To be eligible for the meals, members must agree to check in regularly with an MDwise care manager.
“Accessing healthy food is a challenge for many of our members in the best of times,” said Jessica Cromer, CEO of MDwise. “And with COVID, it’s even more difficult, so we want to remove that barrier for our most medically vulnerable members.”
“The program will improve the health and wellbeing of Hoosiers, as well as lower overall healthcare costs,” Cromer said. According to the
Journal of American Medical Association study, participation in a medically tailored meal program appears to be associated with fewer unplanned hospital and skilled nursing admissions and less overall medical spending.
MDwise has partnered with GA Foods to provide and deliver meals that are nutritionally balanced and filled with the highest-quality ingredients. All meals come with milk, bread and either fruit, juice or dessert.
