The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or SNAP provides food assistance to low- and no-income people and families. It is a federal program administered by the Food and Nutrition Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture; however, benefits are disbursed at the state level.
In Indiana, the Family and Social Services Administration (FSSA) is responsible for determining eligibility and issuing benefits.
Benefits are provided on an electronic card that is used like a debit card and is accepted at most grocery stores. There are online ordering options at stores such as Wal-Mart, Amazon, Aldi and more.
Are college students eligible for SNAP? Students attending an institution of higher education, like a college, university, trade school or technical school more than half-time may be if they meet eligibility requirements. You can ask your school what qualifies as “half-time.”
New policies determining eligibility and benefit use will be taking effect on January 1, 2026. Find more information about these changes and apply for SNAP at: in.gov/fssa/dfr/snap-food-assistance/about-snap/.
